A referral to an expert, like a psychologist
The types of mental health care that can support you
Other strategies to improve and maintain your mental health
If you have a mental health care plan, the Government will pay some or all of the cost of up to ten sessions with a mental health expert in a year. You can get that through the Medicare rebate.
An individual can book and see a psychologist without a referral from another health professional and pay the fee for individual or group therapy programs. This will require full payment of fees at time of consultation.
However, there are many referral options available which may provide rebates and assist with the cost of sessions.
Are available for psychological treatment by registered psychologists under the Australian Government's Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative.
This scheme provides considerable assistance to people living with mental health problems, allowing them greater access to psychologists and providing more affordable mental healthcare.
Under this scheme individuals with a range of mental health issues can access up to 10 individual and 10 group treatment sessions per year. Although a Medicare rebate can be claimed, there may be a gap fee involved (see fees table below).
Any out-of-pocket expenses will count towards the Medicare Safety Net.
See more about the Medicare Safety Net here.
GP’s can provide a total of 5 sessions to people managing a chronic illness with a chronic disease management plan. Your GP will determine your eligibility for this plan. Should you wish to discuss this with your GP, please ensure that you book a long consultation.
Although a Medicare rebate can be claimed, there may be a gap fee involved (see fees table below).
(Group Therapy first prior to individual appointments)
If you find you are in need of psychology support and waiting for individual therapy, Wills Key Psychology can facilitate Group therapy that covers mindfulness therapy, reducing symptoms and mental health skill building. Group therapy is conducted in a confidential, comfortable and insightful setting with others in a social setting.
Group Therapy can help increase understanding of how to manage and reduce symptoms that present in a variety of mental health problems. It decreases our sense of being alone in our experience, and gives us an opportunity to learn, and grow - with others who have shared lived experience.
Group therapy can be a cost effective form of treatment, which may help to offer additional social support and motivation.
If you have ‘extras’ private health insurance, you may be eligible to claim rebates for psychological sessions. Each insurance company is different, it is therefore recommended you check with your insurer about rebate amounts.
Private Health Rebates are processed electronically through HICAPS at the end of your appointment if your fund uses this service. Alternatively, you may still be able to claim rebates by presenting a receipt to your insurer.
Veterans can access psychological services with a referral from their GP. This means that if you hold a DVA WHITE or GOLD card you are entitled to 12 sessions with no financial cost to yourself. To access this service, you will require a DVA referral form from your GP or other medical professional.
Some limitations apply to eligibility for White card holders.
Fees per 50-minute session for Individual therapy with a Clinical Psychologist is $198.40, The Australian Psychological Society currently recommends $260.

Group therapy is $62.60 per session with a Medicare rebate available of $32.60.
The only other fee is if you don't come to your appointment, give sufficient notice, that you are unable to attend or arrive late to appointments.
If you do not attend your appointment, or contact Wills Key Psychology prior to the appointment, a fee equal to session cost will apply – as no opportunity to make this time available for others has been provided.
Due to fullness of clinicians’ diary often, rescheduling of appointments is difficult, not impossible.
Medicare rebates are per time with clinician. Appointments at Wills Key Psychology are usually for 50 minutes. Those who arrive late maybe required to pay the difference between the amount for the time attended and time booked.
Please give at least 24 hours’ notice if you wish to cancel a scheduled appointment to avoid a fee. This is so the appointment can be made available for others who seek assistance.
Late cancellation may result in a fee equal to 50% of session costs. When late cancellation does occur, the practice will attempt where possible to fill the appointment.
Please note Medicare cannot be claimed for non-attended appointments.
When attending individual or group therapy in person, payment is required on the day of the appointment.
Rebates from Medicare or Private Health Funds (both cannot be claimed for the same consultation) can be processed in office. EFTPOS facilities are available for out-of-pocket expenses.
Organisations paying for consultations will be issued an invoice, with payment required within 7 days of the invoice.
Payment options will be provided on the invoice.

GP referrals for psychological sessions under Better Access must specifically state the number of sessions to be provided. The advice is that specifying a range (e.g., “up to 6 sessions” or “up to 10 sessions” is not acceptable. The specific number of sessions (e.g., 6 or 8 must be stated).
